The 'Panton chair' has always fascinated me. Designed by Verner Panton in the '60s, this sleek, modern chair mixed with a classic 60's curve design was the first plastic moulded chair. ("Verner Panton," 2001). explained that Verner's inspiration tended to avoid traditional ideas. He liked to think outside the box and get inspiration from contemporary art as well as the world around him. The simplicity and elegancy caught my eye, so much so that over two decades since Vener Panton has passed and 60 years since the chair was first manufactured his design still resonates in popular culture today.
This design is honourable for its versatility. It can be placed in a clean aesthetic and can also be placed in a busy environment to give off a different, but both equally effective look. It was the first mass-produced chair that could be used indoors and outdoors, groundbreaking at the time.
One of the main reasons why this chair is my favourite design is due to its unique nature. Although it makes sense to have a chair shaped like an 's', it was one of a kind when it was first designed. The chair design is based around our bodies requirements for a comfortable and supportive chair, while still looking sleek.
Design can always improve, which is why I believe this design could have a few adjustments. At the time that this was first designed, plastic was known to be the best up and coming material for literally EVERYTHING. Since then, the world has discovered the negative impacts plastic has on the environment. This is why I mention the bamboo Panton Chair. Although this chair doesn't give the same aesthetics and the sleek, gloss original chair, it provides a more environmentally sustainable option. It creates an authentic and rawness feel that could be equally desired.
The Danish designer, Panton, has made a statement with his design. He has changed the world of furniture forever, which is why the Panton chair is my favourite design.
